Glossary: Car Terminologies

 A-pillar

 The pillar that connects the windshield to the roof.

Airbag

 A safety device that deploys from the steering wheel, dashboard, or ceiling to protect you in a crash by cushioning your impact with a fabric bag filled with gas.

Antenna

A wire that picks up radio waves and sends them to your car’s stereo system.

Auxiliary 1 (AUX 1)

 A source of audio input for your vehicle’s sound system. It may be a CD player, DVD player or another source of audio entertainment. If you have an AUX 1 jack, it will be labeled “AUX” on the radio display panel.

Auxiliary 2 (AUX 2)

A source of audio input for your vehicle’s sound system. It may be a CD player, DVD player, or another source of audio entertainment. If you have an AUX 2 jack, it will be labeled “AUX” on the radio display panel.

B-pillar

The pillar behind the front door on either side of the vehicle separates the front and rear doors from each other and from the rest of the body frame (see also “C-pillar”).

ABS

Anti-lock braking system. Automobile Anti-Lock Braking System, a series of sensors that detect the wheels locking up during braking and automatically modulate the brake pressure to prevent skidding.

Airbag

 A safety device which is inflated by gas to protect occupants from injury in the event of a collision.

Alloy Wheels

 Alloy wheels are made from an alloy of aluminium and other metals, such as magnesium or nickel. They are usually lighter than steel wheels but weaker than cast iron wheels. Alloy wheels also have better heat dissipation properties than steel wheels but offer less strength than cast iron ones.

Active Head Restraints

 Head restraints designed to move up and down and forward and backward when struck by a head, thus reducing whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions.

ADA Compliant: A term used to describe products that are accessible for people with disabilities.

Aerodynamics

 The study of how air flows over and around an object, such as a car or airplane wing, and how this affects its behavior.

Alarm

 An alarm is an electronic device that makes a noise when someone tries to break into your car or steal it. Some alarms will also alert you if there are problems with your engine, such as overheating or running out of oil (waste).

Anti-theft Device

 An anti-theft device is any device that makes it harder for thieves to steal your car. For example, if a thief tries to steal your car by hot wiring it he may not be able to start it because you have installed an immobilizer that stops anyone from starting the engine unless they know a secret code or keycode.

Automatic Transmission 

A transmission that shifts gears automatically, as opposed to having a manual transmission where the driver shifts gear manually.

Brake Assist System (BAS

A system designed to provide additional power for emergency braking scenarios.

Alignment

 A wheel alignment is a process by which the angles of the wheels are adjusted to optimize performance and reduce tire wear. It uses a set of adjustable components that include camber, caster, toe, and wheel alignment.
